It’s Time to Stop the Pain, C. Carder P.C. Contact: Clem Carder Phone: (708) 258-9004 Number of employees: 2 Number of years in business: 2 yrs. Location(s) your business has been: In October, I will have been in Peotone for three years. Prior to that, for seventeen years I had a practice in Homewood, IL. Brief history of business: Although I had learned the Washburn Technique for pain relief over 15 years ago, working with an orthopedic hand surgeon did not give much of an opportunity to utilize the technique. So in 2005 I decided to give up the hand therapy practice I had had for 17 years and open an office in Peotone where I could concentrate on utilizing the Washburn Technique. As much as I love hand therapy, I knew that there are a lot of really good therapists who can treat the upper extremity injuries but there are a limited number of practitioners who specialize in this particular type of treat technique. Memorable moments in company’s history: Anyone who starts a new venture wonders if anyone will come. So when someone called to make an appointment on the first day I was open…that was a memorable moment. Another moment comes to mind of a person who had been suffering with sever pain resulting from a side effect of a treatment to cure her cancer, came to me because nothing else was helping. After the first treatment I asked her, “So what do you think?” Her response, “I think that for the first time in six years, someone is going to help me.” I am happy to say that on a regular basis I still have a lot of those “memorable moments” when people finally find relief from their pain. Best business advice you’ve received and/or given: “Find a job that you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” (Author anonymous) Secret to your success: It is not secret, “the treatment works.” I guess I should take that back, the technique is sort of a secret because a lot of people don’t know about it. I have learned to accept the fact that no one comes to me as their first choice, but when nothing else has given them what they are looking for , I am pleased to be able to offer them another treatment option. Other Information: Even though about 90% of my therapy practice now is treating individuals with pain, when the need arises, I still provide therapy for persons recovering from hand and upper extremity injuries. I utilize Kinesiotape with a lot of my clients and I am one of 60 individuals in the United States and Candada who has been certified to teach Kinesiotaping to other health care professionals. Although Kinesiotape has been available for 30 years, it really gained popularity during the most recent Olympics where it was seen on over 200 athletes. It has been used in the United States for about 12 years. People are always amazed that a piece of tape can be so effective in reducing pain and swelling. In September of 2009, Jeff Johnson, Licensed Massage Therapist, will be available to provide more traditional massage for those requesting it. Jeff is trained in a variety of types of massage but is know for his expertise in providing deep tissue massage. His interest in body building and sports has prompted his working toward obtaining a degree as a certified personal trainer. Jeff feels working with the athletic population for both prevention and recover from injury would allow him to utilize both passions and degrees. Employing the same philosophy as his Aunt Clem, Jeff says, “I can earn a living and never have to “work a day in my life.” |
